APPEAL Of the Liberal Party of Moldova (LP) to the European Parliament, European Commission, Council of Europe, and foreign embassies and international organizations accredited to the Republic of Moldova

    24.10.2008

The Moldovan Liberal Party would like to inform you about the latest events that occurred in the Republic of Moldova concerning the brutal actions of repression committed by the police representatives, on the 5th October this year against the peaceful public demonstrations conducted by the Liberal Party, opposing the military presence of the Russian Army on Moldovan territory. The Police committed unjustified persecutions, maltreatment and arrests during and following the LP public demonstrations. Subsequently, dozens of administrative and penal suits were filed against the Liberal Party members and leaders and Mihai Cârlig,  President of the LP Structure of Orhei, was illegally detained. The Police also committed aggressions against journalists of the independent TV channel “Pro TV Chişinău”, impeding them to properly do their job and accurately cover the event.
The Liberal Party considers that all the aforementioned actions are misdeeds of unprecedented gravity in the Republic of Moldova, and are characteristic only to states where human rights and fundamental liberties are broken and the State institutions and Legal system are functioning against citizens.

The Liberal Party strongly disapproves these blamable actions and characterizes them as massive violations of human rights. The LP considers that the acts committed by the Police against political parties, freedom of meetings, freedom of expression and the mass-media are directed by the current top governors of the state that aim to annihilate any real opposition to the actual Government. Also, the LP considers the recent repressions and terror, as well as those perpetrated during 2008, as logical consequences of the actions and political vision of the authoritarian regime established in the Republic of Moldova by the Party of Communists, ruled by president Vladimir Voronin, based on the ideas of increasing influence of the Police within State until the establishment of a Police State, use of Security and Force structures against citizens with different thinking than the official one, a Legal system subordinated to the central institutions,  repression of demonstrations and public protests, pursuing, persecution, arrest, and administrative punishment of participants in the protests etc.

The Liberal Party is qualifying the events mentioned above as a sign that the Communist authorities do not wish to comply with the European aspirations of the majority of the population that requires the withdrawal of the Russian Army from the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The presence of the Russian Army in Transdniestria is the major obstacle for the integration of the Republic of Moldova in the European Union.

Also, we consider that the abuses of the Force structures against the members of the Liberal Party are because the latter is considered the main Opposition party and the principal opponent of the Communist Party at the next elections. These were the reasons for which the Central Authorities ordered the violent repression of peaceful and democratic demonstrations and the arrangement of false suits on administrative and penal basis against the members and supporters of the LP, and the leaders of territorial structures of the LP, as well as against the LP vice-president, General Mayor of Chişinău municipality, Dorin Chirtoacă. These actions finally seek to exclude the LP out of the law and eliminate it from the Parliamentary elections of spring 2009.

The Liberal Party calls the European Parliament, European Commission, Council of Europe, foreign embassies and international organizations accredited to the Republic of Moldova  to firmly condemn the antidemocratic actions of the Moldovan communist regime expressed through hard repressions of the Opposition parties, to support the legal demand to the Russian Federation to withdraw the Russian Army from Moldovan territory, to uphold the democratic and European aspirations of the majority of citizens and to contribute to the establishment of a true State of Law in the Republic of Moldova.

    Yours faithfully,

    Mihai Ghimpu,
    President of the Liberal Party,

    22 October 2008
